Quilling: It's Origin (and me rambling)

What exactly is quilling?

Well, according to Wikipedia it is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs.

Which I agree with, I guess...

But it's really SOOO much more than that!

It was invented in 105 AD in China, but it's quite different today than it was back then.

They even made it with WIRE back then, which would disagree with what Wikipedia states is the literal meaning of Quilling (rolled paper), so I feel fairly justified with calling my art quilling, even if sometimes it doesn't involve so much rolling of paper as it does the manipulating of paper.

Why is it called quilling? Because you used to use a quill to roll the paper!

Now a-days you use something like this:

Which I own most (if not all) of, although I have broken a few. 😶

Here's an example of the style of quilling done several hundred years ago:

Where-as modern quilling is much more colorful, open and playful.
Here's some examples of some quilling I have created:

This I made for my best friend's graduation:
I'm a panda and she's a platypus! 😁

This might be my FAVORITE project ever, and it's my profile picture for my blog!
I created it after seeing similar projects, and I'll have to post about it sometime.

This is the nativity scene I 3D-Quilled for my mom, and although I know for a fact I have better photos, I couldn't find them, so this will have to do.
The camel was the only thing I had a tutorial for, and I had to shrink it down, so that was a bit of a pain.

And this was my first "on edge" quilling project!
Not bad for my first attempt at this technique!

Anyway, I'll probably do a post on some of my favorite tools and papers to work with, but for now,

GO QUILL THE WORLD!

...

or don't.
I don't particularly care. 😂

although, quilling a globe does sound like a fun undertaking...
